Art and Healing

I am a artist. I am not a therapist. This blog is about how art helps me heal. This past year had a few challenges, I often say when things are hard, it is, life getting in the way. Sometimes, we, ourselves, allow that to happen. Other times, little control over what the world beings our direction.

I find peace when I am making art. One of the greatest feelings is that moment of Flow. When you are so involved with what you are creating that time, sound, everything, is gone except for the art. That link between the artist and the work. It does not happen often, at least not for me but when it does appear, it is wonderful. Plus, the bonus is you create a piece of art and are happy with the work.

The month of January I have managed to get two pieces finished. I have several others underway, some older pieces I started last year and they are waiting to be next on the easel.

How does art heal? My art takes me into nature, walking in the woods, listening to the birds in my backyard, being open minded and listening from the heart. I believe everything is connected. When I do a pastel or oil painting of a bird, it is a bird that I have seen. I take lots of photographs, I do sketches, I again, listen. When you look at my art I want you to know that this animal or tree is real. This is what heals me, that connection with nature, with art and allowing me to create.

The power of the image is part of my process. Sometimes what you paint is as important as why. The why is because I have to, I have always had a pencil in my hand I love what I do, I love sharing art, talking about art and knowing where my art goes to live. The images, the symbolism are part of what I am painting. I paint a lot of birds, they are messengers between the other world and the earth we share.

The pastel painting I just finish is of a Great Horned Owl. Owls are symbols of death in some cultures. In others wisdom, help and power. Owls, are powerful creatures and to my eyes beautiful. The colors, the patterns, looking into those eyes, brings a calmness. As I worked on this piece it helped me focus, look inside a bit, grieve, and heal.

Making art, thinking of friends, family, listening to music, connecting with nature, wildlife. These are the things that heal my heART.

Thank you for sharing this with me today. I hope you enjoy my latest little owl. Title: Spirit  Image Size: 7X10"  Medium: Pastel on Rives BFK Paper

A New Year and A New Website

Welcome! 2020 has already started to have many new adventures. My husband, Rick and I brought in the New Year camping at Buckskin Mountain State Park, Parker, AZ. Just this past week we were camping at Patagonia Lake State Park, in Southern AZ, about 13 miles from the Mexican boarder. I have many new photo references to create new works for my new web site and for you.

My new website is under www.lindaharrisonparsons.com hosted by FASO. More to come on that....

I have my annual paper making workshop coming up Feb. 15 to 22, 2020. March 7th I will be doing plein air painting at Desert Ridge, AZ. Waiting to hear on a few shows. A surprise coming in later March. Summer takes me to the east coast to teach at Common Ground on the Hill.

It is looking to be a busy year.
