Things To Come and Go!

It is close to the end of a very difficult year, and we are all ready for the change. Helping to send out this long, old year came a very bright full "Cold Moon" last evening, December 29th, 2020. On the morning of the 29th I was up way before the birds and was greeted by this "Cold Moon" and a lunar halo. A circle of color around the moon, caused by ice crystals that form in the clouds, reflecting and refracting light. As is always the case I had my handy camera and played around with a few photos, 150 or so, not that many. I would like to say it was for research, but I truly love watching the night sky, the moon, stars, planets and comets that shoot through the sky. The research part comes from the idea that I wanted to do a piece using the saguaro cactus in our backyard that had to come down this year. I did a little practice piece and 2021 will be the year of the full moon as my muse. I have several ideas floating around, a couple owl images come to mind. Hopefully, they will come together as the octopus did for 2020. I still plan more octopus pieces, along with tree pieces and African wildlife is in the mix. Some people put together their resolutions list of things they want to do, my list is art I want to make. Yes, I have literally written down my list of ideas along with sketches and check off the list as I get the works completed.

This year the octopus was my muse, the complex structure became a form of meditation while painting. Learning more about octopus, the high level of intelligence just added to the pleasure of creating these pieces. There are 4 finished works, two done in oil paint, and two done with charcoal. You can find the octopus images on my website. My hope is, there goes that word again, hope, it has been reoccurring a lot this week. My hope is that the full moon image will be part of a series of pieces. I don't force this to happen but as I create usually there is a follow up idea, thus begins the series. Here is the first preliminary sketch. I want to keep it simple, clean lines, may use oil but still not 100% sure about the medium. We will all find out soon, as I plan this to be the first piece in the New Year.

I try to do a give away each year, 2020 I did a "Tree of Life" piece. In 2021 I will have two pieces to offer. A January Blog/Newsletter will soon follow this one with more details on how you could win a free piece of my art.

Take care, be safe, continue to mask up in the New Year!
