Working Progress

Working Progress: I thought the artist term a "Work In Progress" covered both how I am recovering and art on the drawing table. Short update on me, my new bionic elbow is working well. Still doing PT multiple times a day but luckily that now includes a little drawing time. I am still doing some things left handed but working on fine details with the right. For now this gives me a little extra time to work.

"Ghost Trees" Work in Progress
There are several projects floating around the studio. The piece above is a variation of my tree pieces. It is mixed mediums, it started as a monotype using ink and plants. The plants leave an embossed area in the paper. I looked at it trying to decide if it was going to go into the container for recycled handmade paper or become a renewed creation. Kind of like me.
I turned the print on it's side and saw trees. I used watercolor crayons to add more color for the background. Pastel pencils were used to make the soft ghostly trees. Both of these processes were done left handed. Gel pens come in handy for adding strong white on top of color, this part was done right handed. I was hoping to have this piece closer to finished but I am limited to how much my right arm can handle. Slow and gentle is how it is these days. At some point "Ghost Trees" will be posted as a finished piece.

Untitled - Secretary Bird
It is not unusual for me to have several pieces going at one time. While the background was drying on "Ghost Trees" I started this Secretary Bird, using 9x12" black paper with white and black charcoal pencils. I love the look of this style. Plus, it is easy on my hand, making me aware of holding the pencils lightly. I took the photo of this African terrestrial bird of prey at the San Diego Zoo. I have wanted to draw this bird for a long time. The Secretary Bird, is likely to be seen on the ground, they do fly but prefer chasing their prey. They are about 4 feet tall, live south of the Sahara Desert.
This technique is influenced by Notan the Japanese term for light and dark in balance. The benefit of working this way helps to see light to dark and strengthen composition. I love working in B&W but it often is followed by a similar work in color. More to come on that, maybe later this year.
Thank you to everyone for your cards and messages. I am grateful for the progress I am making and that I am back at the drawing table.
